The Truth About Probiotics

Probiotics are live microorganisms that are generally considered good for health. They naturally exist in the human body and in food supplements. Regular consumption of these foods boost the immune system, lower serum cholesterol levels, decreasing lactose intolerance, relief from colitis, lowering cholesterol, and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestine. Drinking milk fermented with these bacteria results in a slight decrease in blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

Cancer prevention is one of the most significant of all benefits. Lactobacillus bulgaricus strain prevents mutation of colon cancer. Different bacteria have different effects on the body thus their benefit should not be an indicator of certain microorganism benefits.

Nutritionists say that taking probiotics supplements may not necessarily increase the intestinal flora amount. The findings are certainly not enough to substantiate these claims. Despite their benefits, there are situations where they can be harmful to a person. People with a low immune system or very ill have developed lactobacillus septicemia. Probiotics can also increase the death rate in patients with acute pancreatitis.
